Mumbai: The Vikhe Patil family's hold on Maharashtra's Ahmednagar Lok Sabha seat, which has been a BJP stronghold since 2009, is facing a tough challenge from NC (SP) candidate Nilesh Lanke, who has projected himself as a leader of the common man. ,

Sitting BJP MP Sujay Vikhe Patil has been re-nominated by the party on the seat in 2019, defeating Sangram Jagtap of the then undivided NCP by a margin of 2,81,526 votes. This time after the split in NCP, Ajit Pawar is campaigning for faction leader Jagtap Vikhe Patil.

Lanke, who was earlier in the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), resigned as MLA and is contesting the election on the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) ticket.

Voting on this seat will be held on May 13 in the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections. Political observers believe that this election is a chance for Lanke to prove himself as a person who can defeat the powerful, while it is a chance for Sujay Vikhe Patil to achieve victory. The election will carry forward the legacy of his family and the district. This is important to ensure the dominance of the saffron party.Besides, it is also a fight between traditional rivals Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Sharad Pawar, he said.

In 2019 Vikhe Patil visited most of the villages in the constituency and established good relations with the local people. However, some political observers believe he has lost his touch after his 2019 victory, making it easier for Lanke to move on.

“As an MP, one needs to be in regular touch with one's voters and the people. I know that Sujay Vikhe Patil has not been consistent in maintaining contact with the people as most of the educational institutions of his (Vikhe Patil family) are in Shirdi Lok Sabha constituency. And not in Ahmednagar,” Lanke said.

However, the BJP candidate rejected this allegation.

Vikhe Patil said, “I have set up a network of assistants for every tehsil in my Lok Sabha constituency.“I regularly get updates from people about the issues they face.”

He claimed that he has done a lot of developmental work including approving and constructing highways and developing the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area to provide employment to the youth. “You need someone who can understand technical issues and follow them up with different departments. Delhi."

Ahmednagar Lok Sabha constituency consists of six assembly constituencies – Ahmednagar City, Shevgaon, Rahuri, Parner, Shrigonda and Karjat-Jamkhed.Severe water shortage is a major problem in the constituency.

Sujay Vikhe Patil belongs to a prominent political family of Ahmednaga district. His great grandfather, late Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil, had established India's first sugar co-operative factory. His father Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil is a minister in the Eknath Shinde government. Before joining BJP in 2019, he was associated with Congress and before that Shiv Sena for two decades. He has been representing Shirdi assembly constituency of Ahmednagar district since 1995.The BJP Lok Sabha candidate's grandfather, late Balasaheb Vikhe-Patil, was MP from Kopargaon seven times and Ahmednagar once after delimitation. He was a part of Congress as well as Shiv Sena and was a minister in the Ata Bihari Vajpayee government. Sujay Vikhe Patil is largely dependent on his family and the educational and cooperative institutions controlled by the traditional BJP vote bank to win the election.

Lanke, on the other hand, has a strong network of loyal supporters and his efforts to provide free treatment to people during the Covid pandemic received much appreciation from the locals. He is keeping his campaign focused on local issues like water supply and healthcare. The old enmity between Sharad Pawar and Vikhe Patil family is also a big factor in this seat.
