Bhubaneswar, Odisha Police on Monday registered its first FIR under provisions of the new criminal code, the Indian Justice Code, against a man for allegedly threatening an employee of a private firm here on Monday, officials said.

Three new criminal laws came into force on Monday, bringing far-reaching changes to India's criminal justice system.

The Indian Civil Code (BNS), the Indian Civil Defense Code (BNSS) and the Indian Evidence Act (BSA) replaced the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.

An FIR was registered at Laxmisagar police station in Bhubaneswar under sections 126(2), 115(2), 109, 118(1) and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code based on the complaint of the victim's son Rudra Prasad Das.

The FIR, a copy of which is with him, states that on June 29, at around 8.15 pm, three men attacked Rudra's father Gauranga Charan Das with a blade near Chintamanishwar temple.

Inspector P Shyam Sunder Rao, in-charge of Lakshmisagar police station, registered the case (number 370/24) and handed over the investigation to SI G Saha.

"The accused has been threatening Gauranga for the past few days and attacked him with a blade on June 29. The complainant said the miscreants threatened Gauranga again on Monday, following which she lodged an FIR. After receiving her complaint A case has been registered against the accused under the new law,” Rao said.
