Balasore (Odisha) A local court in Odisha's Balasore district sentenced a couple to life imprisonment for the murder of their disabled minor child in 2022.
Additional Sessions Judge Biswajit Das pronounced the verdict, awarding life imprisonment to Ganesh Jena and his second wife Pratima Jena, residents of Chandmaripadiya under Sahadevkhunta police station area of Balasore city, and ordering them to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 each.
Government lawyer Pranab Kumar Panda said that if the fine is not paid, there will be an additional jail term of six months.
The incident took place in August 2022, when the child was strangled to death by his father and stepmother due to his physical challenges. Her body was dumped under the Nuniyajodi bridge on the outskirts of the city, Panda said.
After getting information about the incident, the grandmother of the deceased lodged an FIR with Sahadevkhunta police.
The court, after examining 15 witnesses and 16 witnesses, convicted the couple under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sections 302, 120B, 201 and 34.
