Bhubaneswar, BJD leader and former MP Achyuta Samanta on Sunday announced his exit from active politics in the wake of the regional party's defeat in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

Samant, who was defeated from Kandhamal Lok Sabha seat, made this announcement a day after meeting BJD president Naveen Patnaik.

The founder of educational institutions like KIIT and KISS also thanked Patnaik for giving him the opportunity in both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.

The former MP said that he will continue the social services that he has been providing for the last 32 years.

Samant thanked the BJD members and people of Kandhamal parliamentary constituency for their love and support.

In the recently held elections in Kandhamal, BJP candidate Sukant Kumar Panigrahi defeated Samant by a margin of 21,371 votes.
