New Delhi: NOTA created a record with 2.18 lakh voters choosing 'none of the above' option in Madhya Pradesh's Indore in the Lok Sabha elections, the counting of which was underway on Tuesday.

Of the total voters, 14.01 per cent chose the 'none of the above' option, which was introduced after a Supreme Court order in 2013.

In the 2019 parliamentary elections, voters in Bihar's Gopalganj had set a record, with 51,660 or five per cent choosing the NOTA option, which is placed as the last option on the electronic voting machine.

According to the latest trends available on the Election Commission website at 3.15 pm, more than 4.62 lakh (0.99 per cent of the total voters) opted for NOTA.

Of the 61,31,33,300 votes cast in the 2019 elections, 65,14,558 (1.06 percent) were cast for NOTA.Similarly, in the 2014 parliamentary elections, out of 55,38,02,946 votes, 60,02,942 (1.08 percent) were cast for NOTA.

Congress suffered a setback on Indore Lok Sabha seat when its candidate Akshay Kanti Bam withdrew his nomination on April 29, the last date for withdrawal of nomination.

Bam later joined BJP, after which Congress appealed to the people to press NOTA option on EVMs during voting in Indore on 13 May.

Former Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat had recently described NOTA as having a "symbolic" effect and said it could be considered to have legal effect on election results only if it gets more than 50 per cent of the votes in a seat. Could.

Rawat had also told that even if 99 out of 100 votes go in favor of the NOTA option and someone gets one vote, the candidate will still be victorious.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Indore witnessed 69 percent voting and 5,045 voters opted for NOTA.Rawat said, "In the present situation, NOTA has only symbolic importance and it cannot affect the election results of any seat."

"To show the political community that they do not consider candidates with criminal antecedents or other ineligible candidates worthy of their votes, more than 50 per cent of the voters will have to opt for NOTA once on one seat. Only then on elections to Parliament and There will be pressure."The commission will grow and they will have to think about changing the law to make NOTA effective on election results."
