India's Praggnanand R suffered a defeat in the Armageddon against Fabiano Caruana, who has an outside chance of winning the title. He will have to defeat Hikaru Nakamura in the final round and hope that local hero Magnus Carlsen loses his game against Caruana.

Five-time world champion Carlsen extended his lead with an Armageddon win over Alireza Firoza in Round 9. This means that a win in the final round for Carlsen would guarantee him winning the tournament.

Nakamura, who lost against current world champion Ding Liren at Armageddon, will have to win the last game with black against Praggnananda to win the tournament.

Meanwhile, in the women's tournament, the only classic win of the day came from Lei Tingjie vs Vaishali R Game. The Chinese GM won a decisive victory with the white pieces in 30 moves and his chances of winning the tournament in the final round have increased significantly.

Women's world champion Xu Wenjun beat Koneru Humpy in Armageddon to lead the competition by 1.5 points, while Anna Muzychuk recorded a tie-break win over Pia Krammling.

With the tournament reaching the final round, there is only a 1.5-point gap between Wenjun, Tingjie and Muzychuk at the top of the table in the women's tournament, as the inaugural edition of the Norway Chess 2024 Women's Tournament is set for a thrilling finale.
