New Delhi: Former India cricketer Punjab all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi and former Haryana cricketer Ajay Ratra are among the many candidates who have been interviewed for the national selector's post, which will soon be succeeded by former India fast bowler Salil Ankola. Will become vacant after resignation.

BCCI has also interviewed Himachal Pradesh fast bowler turned match referee Shakti Singh and former Punjab batsman Ajay Mehra. Junior national selector Krishna Mohan is also understood to be in contention, although this could not be independently confirmed.

Ratra is currently associated with the National Cricket Academy (NCA) as a fielding coach while Sodhi is a BCCI match referee with Shakti. Mehra is currently a commentator.

Ankola, who could be a part of the junior selection setup, will have to vacate his post of national selector as the senior selection panel has two people from the West Zone, specifically Mumbai.Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar is also from Mumbai and since he will head the panel, the BCCI conference will force Ankola out.

It is learned that since Ankola will be out without any mistake, BCCI officials are planning to make him the chairman of the junior selection committee. The junior committee has no international players in its roster and is headed by former Karnataka wicketkeeper Tilak Naidu.

Ankola has played one Test and 20 ODIs between 1989 and 1997, so he may be better suited for the position.

“From Delhi is former India off-spinner Nikhil Chopra, who is believed to have strong support from the DDCA.The other candidate is former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas, who also has the support of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association.

"But, it turns out that a very influential former functionary wanted former Punjab captain Krishna Mohan to apply and he applied accordingly. Now, whether he will get the job or not is another matter, but he was asked to apply I went." A senior BCCI source following the developments said on the condition of anonymity.

All-rounder Mohan played 45 first-class matches for Punjab between 1987 and 1993 and was a member of the Ranji Trophy-winning Punjab team that included Navjot Singh Sidhu, Vikram Rathod and Gursharan Singh. If Mohan gets the job, he can remain in the post for two years as the BCCI constitution allows a cumulative five years for someone who has been on both the junior and senior selection committee.
