Thiruvananthapuram: The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala on Saturday said the party was maintaining transparency in its bank accounts and funds and details of the transactions had already been submitted to the Election Commission and the Income Tax Department.

CPI(M) state secretary M Govindan said that if the party has to submit any account details, it is ready to furnish all necessary information before any agency.

He was responding to a question regarding media reports about the Income Tax Department freezing a bank account in the name of the party's Thrissur District Committee.

Govindan did not deny the reports and said there was no unaccounted money in the party's bank accounts.

When journalists asked about senior party leader and CPI(M) Thrissur district secretary MM Varghese being allegedly summoned by the Income Tax Department in this regard, he said let them summon anyone and the party will be punished for its actions. There is no fear or worry about it.

“We have the bank accounts and funds…but we also have the documents,” Govindan said.We have immense money."

The veteran leader accused central agencies and the media of trying to malign the image of the Marxist party by making baseless allegations without any evidence.

"We have bank accounts...and we have submitted all the details with the Election Commission and the Income Tax Department," he said.

Govindan further alleged that the action of central agencies against the opposition parties was part of a fascist agenda being implemented by the BJP-led central government. Even Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was behind bars in the name of liquor policy scam and what else could he do, Govindan asked.

In a press statement issued later, the CPI(M) state secretariat said the freezing of the accounts of the party's Thrissur district committee is 'highly condemnable'.CPI(M) is a party which submits its income and expenditure details to the Income Tax Department and Election Commission every year and the bank account details of Thrissur District Committee are also submitted.

The party alleged that the action of freezing bank accounts was part of the BJ government's decision to use central agencies to address its grievances in the run-up to the elections.

The Income Tax Department, without giving any prior notice and without seeking any explanation, froze the account and also imposed additional charges.

“The IT department has taken a very wrong step in this regard,” the CPI(M) said.

Registering a strong protest against such actions, the Marxist party alleged that such steps were part of the BJP-led central government's policy to victimize opposition parties and the governments led by them.
