Pune: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said police negligence has come to light in the handling of a 17-year-old boy's car accident in Pune and denied any pressure on the police investigating the case.

A Porsche car allegedly hit a 17-year-old boy, who police claim was drunk, in Pune city's Kalyani Nagar early Sunday morning. The teenager's father, the builder and four people associated with two restaurants where he was served liquor before the fatal accident have been arrested by the police.

Amidst the outrage over the accident, Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio, made a surprise visit to the Pune Police Commissionerate to review the matter, later addressing the media.

On residents' demand to increase pub closing time from 1.30 pm to 1 am, Fadnavis said he has asked the police department to submit a report on the issue.Asked about permission to drive a Porsche car without registration, he said the high-end vehicle was purchased in Bengaluru and brought to Pune.

Fadnavi said, "As per preliminary information, Pune RTO inspected the car, but the road tax that was due to be paid was not paid. If there is any violation in this regard, a separate FIR will be filed."

He said that there was no pressure on the police regarding the case.

"There was no pressure on the police in this case and no negligence has been found. An ACP-rank officer has been asked to examine the CCTV footage of the police station during the entire period (after the juvenile's detention) to establish its Can be detected." It will be known whether anyone was there or not. "If anything like helping (the boy) or putting pressure (on the police) comes to light, action will be taken," Fadnavis assured.

"The police have taken the case seriously and will not tolerate anyone getting bail despite the murder of two people," he said.

Hours after being taken into custody, the Juvenile Justice Board granted bail to the boy.

Fadnavis said concerns have been raised over pubs and restaurants not strictly checking the age of consumers to prevent underage drinking.“Police have been directed to enforce the rules made for establishments serving liquor,” the Home Minister said.

He said that the excise department and municipal corporations have been instructed to check whether the conditions imposed while issuing licenses to these establishments are being followed or not.

Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut demanded removal of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar over the car accident.

Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Raut alleged that the police gave a false report regarding the incident and wondered whom the Pune police chief was trying to save.

Raut said, "The Pune Police Commissioner should be dismissed. Whom has he helped in this case? Two innocent people lost their lives. The boy can be seen drinking alcohol in the pub."
