New Delhi: India has not provided any tariff rate quota (TRQ) for import of milk and its products since 2014-15, a senior commerce ministry official said on Monday.

Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Santosh Kumar Sarangi said that in the last 20 years, imports of milk and milk products like skimmed milk powder have been affected only in three years under TRQ.

"There has been no import of milk and milk products under TRQ since 2014-15," he told reporters here.

After 2011-12, there has been no import of skimmed milk powder using the TRQ route.

TRQ is a mechanism that allows the import of a specified quantity of specific products at lower customs duties. Tariff quotas are used on a wide range of products but most commonly in the agricultural sector. The most common are grains, meat, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products.

He said that till date there is no pending application for TRQ for these products.

Sarangi also rejected news reports that the Indian government had given new duty concessions for imports of maize and vegetable oils under the TRQ.

"In this regard, it may be noted that no new TRQ has been announced by the Government of India," he said.
