New Delhi: The Income Tax Department on Tuesday said there was no data loss related to taxpayers in the fire that broke out in the CR building in ITO, in which an official died.

In a post on Twitter, the Income Tax Department said the fire has now been brought under control and the cause is being ascertained.

"A tragic fire incident occurred today at the Central Revenue Building, New Delhi... The fire broke out in Room No. 325 and adjoining rooms, which were mainly used for administrative purposes," the Income Tax Department said. The fire brigade was called immediately.

"No physical records have been damaged. There is no data loss related to taxpayers as all income tax returns are being filed online and all related proceedings are also being done electronically," it said.

The tax department said an office superintendent was trapped by smoke and lost his life despite best efforts to save him.

"The Income Tax Department expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased and is providing all possible assistance to the family in this hour of grief," it said.
