Mumbai: A court here on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of a man from Uttarakhand accused of uploading obscene deepfake videos of actor Amitabh Bachchan on social media.

The pre-arrest bail plea of Abhijeet Patil, who runs an Ayurveda pharmaceutical company in Rishikesh, was rejected by Sessions Judge VM Pathade. Detailed order was not yet available.

The accused allegedly created and posted obscene deepfake videos of Bachchan on social media to promote products related to sexual health.

After the case was registered against him here, Patil had filed an anticipatory bail petition.

He said that the allegations against him were "baseless, false and fabricated" and that he had not committed any crime.

Police opposed their plea, saying that cyber criminals think that even if they steal identities of celebrities and actors and make fake porn videos, they will easily get bail. The prosecution told the court that this was boosting his morale.

Special public prosecutor Iqbal Solkar said the investigation would be hampered if the accused gets protection from arrest.

The prosecution claimed that the pornographic video had damaged Bachchan's image across the world.

After this the judge rejected Patil's petition.

Bachchan's legal team had filed a complaint with the Mumbai Cyber Police on May 4 after several deepfake videos surfaced in which he was shown promoting Patil's company's products using obscene language.
