New Delhi [India], In her second term, Nirmala Sitharaman formally took charge as the Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs on Wednesday morning.

Finance Secretary TV Somanathan and other secretaries of the Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs welcomed Sitharaman at the office in North Block.

Nirmala Sitharaman, who is among the few who have been Union ministers in both the 2014 and 2019 Modi cabinets, was sworn in as a Union Cabinet minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new Union Council of Ministers at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday evening. She was the first woman appointed as the full-time Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs. Earlier, when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India, she held the charge of Finance as an additional portfolio for a short period.On assuming charge, he expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving him the opportunity to work and serve India again as the Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs.

He was briefed by the Secretaries on ongoing policy issues.

He said that the government is fully committed to ensuring 'ease of living' for its citizens and will continue to take further steps in this regard.

Nirmala Sitharaman also said that the reforms undertaken since 2014 will continue, providing macroeconomic stability and growth for India. He also highlighted India's commendable growth story in recent years amid global challenges and said there is an optimistic economic outlook for the years to come.He urged the departments to pursue the development agenda of the NDA government with renewed vigor and ensure responsive policymaking to achieve the Prime Minister's vision of 'Developed India'.

She was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in the Indian Parliament in 2014 and subsequently re-elected in 2016. He has never contested the Lok Sabha elections till now.

She has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party since 2008.

Sitharaman was born in 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.He did his schooling and graduation in Economics from Seethayakshmi Ramaswamy College, Tiruchirappalli. He obtained a master's degree in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

After completing her studies, Sitharaman served as Assistant to the Economist at the Association of Agricultural Engineers, UK in London. He later worked as Senior Manager (Research and Analysis) at Price Waterhouse, London. During this time he also worked with BBC World Service for some time.On his return to India, he served as Deputy Director of the Center for Public Policy Studies in Hyderabad. She was a member of the National Commission for Women from 2003-2005 and played an important role in raising various issues of women empowerment.

As Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman has presented six budgets so far, including the interim budget on February 1. She became the second finance minister to present the sixth consecutive budget, equaling her record with former PM Morarji Desai. Sitharaman, the country's first full-time woman finance minister, has presented five full budgets since July 2019.Sitharaman surpassed the record set by her predecessors, such as Manmohan Singh, Arun Jaitley, P. Chidambaram and Yashwant Sinha, who had presented five consecutive budgets.

During his ministry, he brought some major changes in the budget process.
