Port Blair: An Air India flight made a successful landing at Port Blair airport in the night, an official statement said.

Air India Airbus A321 with 68 passengers landed at INS Utkrosh on Friday evening. INS Utkrosh is under the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) and is located in the same complex as the Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair.

"The aircraft took off from Kolkata at around 5.40 pm and landed successfully at Port Blair at 7.34 pm. The aircraft proceeded towards Veer Savarkar International Terminal to disembark the passengers," a statement issued by the Andaman and Nicobar Command said.

“This successful night landing is an important step towards enhancing air connectivity to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, benefiting the islanders and promoting tourism. This historic event is a joint effort of the Indian Navy, Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) and the Airport Authority This has been possible through the consistent efforts of India (AAI) over the years,” it said.

AAL has upgraded the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Veer Savarkar International Airport to CAT-I to accommodate the expected increase in tourist inflow, the statement said.

"The Utkrosh airfield is fully capable of handling both day and night operations," said a senior Andaman official. Apart from its strategic importance, these developments will also help in improving regional connectivity and strengthening the 'Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik' (UDAN) scheme. This is an important step forward." and Nicobar Command Officer.

He urged private airline operators to make maximum use of the night landing and takeoff facility at Port Blair Airport.
