New Delhi: More than 100 accused have been convicted in counterfeit Indian currency notes (FICN) and terrorism cases, among others, in the last 18 months, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said on Tuesday.

The anti-terror agency got 79 accused convicted in 27 cases in 2023, followed by the conviction of 26 accused in the six cases in which the special NIA courts pronounced sentence in the first half of 2024, he said.

This has taken the number of accused convicted in various NIA cases, from 2019 to June 2024, to 354.

The convictions came in 100 cases, out of a total of 103 decisions taken by the special courts of the NIA during this period, according to a statement issued by the agency.

From January 2023 to date, a maximum of 18 convictions have been obtained in FICN cases.

This follows the sentencing of 15 accused in ISIS-related cases as a result of the NIA's concerted crackdown on the global terror network's attempts to spread its wings in India by proliferating modules across states.

"Meticulous investigation, backed by scientific methods, has enabled the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to secure convictions against as many as 105 accused in 33 cases in the last 18 months," he added.

NIA's exhaustive investigation has yielded 14 convictions in terror financing cases between 2023 and 2024, and an equal number of accused were punished by courts in JBM (Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, Bangladesh) sponsored terrorism cases. .

"The year 2023 also witnessed a total of seven convictions against Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) terrorists, and two more members of the terrorist group were punished in 2024," the agency said.

Another key target group of the NIA has been the banned group Popular Front of India (PFI), and the agency managed to get six of its members convicted last year.

"In fact, Maoist terrorists have largely been on the NIA's radar in recent times due to their attempts to revive the insurgency, with the agency securing conviction of five accused in the PLA (Maoist) case. in 2023," the statement says. .

A total of seven convictions were pronounced in two different Naxal cases: three in one case in 2023 and four in another case in 2024.

Other convictions in the 18 months starting in January 2023 were Babbar Khalsa International or BKI (4), CPI-Maoist (2), Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent or AQIS (2) and one each from the Liberation Council Hynniewtrep National Democratic Front (HNLC), the Bodoland National Democratic Front (Songbijit) or the NDFB (S) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), he said.
