New Delhi: The NHRC on Thursday said it had issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh police chief over the reported suicide of two brothers due to an alleged atrocity committed by Hathras police personnel.

The police are supposed to protect people from any atrocities, but in this case it seems that they became the "perpetrators", which is a matter of concern, observed the National Human Rights Commission.

The NHRC took suo motu cognizance of a media report published on June 25 that "two brothers from Agra committed suicide within three days due to alleged harassment by police personnel of Sadabad police station in Hathras", the human rights panel said in a statement.

Apparently, one of the brothers left a suicide note in this regard.

The Commission has observed that the content of the media report, if true, indicates a serious problem of human rights violation.

"According to the media report, it appears that the police personnel acted inhumanely and cruelly towards both the victims, thereby ending their lives. Therefore, the Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Uttar Pradesh Police calling for a detailed investigation report within a week," the statement said.

It should also include the status of the FIR registered, action taken against the responsible officials and compensation, if any, provided to the family members of the deceased, he added.

"According to the media report, the police detained the younger brother for two days alleging that his brother-in-law had eloped with a girl and released him only after accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000. Two days later, his elder brother and "Mis nephews were detained by the police demanding Rs 90,000 as bribe to release them," the statement said.

"Apparently, a part of the amount was also paid, but the SHO of PS Sadabad, Hathras, was pressurizing them to pay more. Reportedly, the elder brother had also brought the matter to the notice of the SO for action against the SHO", said.
