New Delhi, The National Green Tribunal has directed the concerned authorities to expedite the demarcation of floodplains of Ganga and Ram Ganga in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh.

The green panel was hearing a petition alleging that a government-owned company in the energy sector was carrying out illegal construction in the floodplains of rivers in Milak Kharakpur Baje village of Munda Pandey block of the district.

A tributary of the Ganga, the Ram Ganga originates in Uttarakhand and enters Uttar Pradesh in Bijnor district.

In February, a report by the District Magistrate of Moradabad and the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board said that a pipeline was being constructed by GAIL.

A bench of National Green Tribunal Chairman Justice Prakash Srivastava said that as per earlier directions of the tribunal, the District Magistrate filed another report, directing the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) at Roorkee to demarcate the flood zone. Rs 1.12 crore was paid.According to the NIH, determination of geo-coordinates for flood zone demarcation will be completed within 12 months, after which the demarcation process will begin, the bench - also comprising judicial member Justice Aru Kumar Tyagi and expert member A Senthil Vel - reports. Noting down said.

In an order passed on April 12, the bench said that according to the authorities concerned, it can be ascertained only after the process of demarcation is completed whether the construction work was within the flood zone or not.

"Therefore, we dispose of the original application, direct the authorities to expedite the process of demarcation of the flood area and submit quarterly reports before the Tribunal disclosing the progress till the demarcation is done and the project proponent (GAIL ) if necessary after demarcation, and thereafter submit the final action report,” the tribunal said.
