AGARTALA: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has suspended train services in the Lumding-Badarpur division till June 1 following the rise in water level of Barak and other rivers, an official said on Thursday.

Damage to tracks caused by Cyclone Remal in the New Haflong-Chandranathpu section under Lumding division connecting Tripura has been repaired, but the water level in Barak and other drains remains dangerously high, leading to the closure of major railway bridges. There is danger.

"Considering all aspects, train services in the New Haflong-Chandranathpur section have been suspended till June 1," NFR chief PRO Sabyasachi Dey said over phone.

He said the IMD on Thursday has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in the region for the next five days.

"If the area receives heavy rainfall as per the IMD bulletin, the situation will worsen," he said.

Responding to the disruption in railway services, Tripura Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushant Choudhary said there was no need to panic over the sudden suspension of railway services in Badarpur-Lumding division.

Choudhary said NFR is carrying out the work of clearing debris from the tracks to resume TRAI services between Badarpur and Lumding. He spoke with the General Manager of NFR, who assured him to resume services within two to three days.
