Resources Minister Shane Jones said on Sunday the list identified 35 minerals that are essential to economic function, are in international demand and are at high risk of supply disruption both domestically and internationally.

The draft list considers minerals that are needed internationally, where New Zealand may be able to contribute to the supply, Xinhua news agency reported, quoting the minister.

It also considers risks to domestic and international supply chains and where greater supply resilience needs to be built.

Jones said the list, once finalized, could include strategies for developing specific minerals.

The draft list was informed by a report released last month on the country's mineral development prospects based on geological, geochemical and geophysical studies as well as geography and mapping of mineral reserves.
