Jirania (Tripura) [India], Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Thursday said that new registration of three-wheelers has been banned in the jurisdiction of Agartala Municipal Corporation considering the interest of the people of the city.

According to him, it was the only option left to curb the excessive traffic congestion affecting vehicle movement in the capital of the northeastern state.

The decision, however, sparked negative reactions from opposition parties and some transport workers' unions.

"We do not want to comment further on this. Whatever decision is taken, it is in public interest. A notification in this regard has also been issued. City areas witness heavy congestion which often leads to chaos in Agartala Municipal Corporation Areas This is our common observation and we cannot allow it to continue for an indefinite period of time keeping this in mind and considering the general public interest, we have taken this initiative,” the Minister told ANI.

Downplaying the protests of opposition party leaders, he said: "I don't know which party has talked about what, but the fact is that neither of the two opposition parties have any constructive issues left. They always think destructively and They try to show all the good works." of the government in a negative perspective. "We want to appeal to the public not to be fooled by the unfounded statements of the opposition parties and to let development move forward."

The Minister also clarified that the ban was only effective in Agartala Municipal Corporation areas. Outside this zone, there is no prohibition on the new registration of three-wheeled vehicles.

"The ban applies only to registration. The ban will apply only in areas that come under the jurisdiction of the Agartala Municipal Corporation. There is no ban on the sale of three-wheelers. Entrepreneurs do not have any ban on the sale of electronic carts. Only in urban areas have we banned new registrations and in the coming days we will take many more decisions of this type in the public interest," said the Minister.
