New Delhi [India], Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has arrived in the national capital today to attend the much-awaited swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi.

He was welcomed by P Kumaran, Officer on Special Duty (ER and DPA) Division of the Ministry of External Affairs.

"Warm welcome to President of Sri Lanka @RW_UNP on his arrival in New Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. He was received at the airport by OSD (ER&DPA) P. Kumaran," the official said. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on Twitter.India and Sri Lanka are civilizational partners and have strong and enduring bilateral relations.

PM Modi was on a two-day visit to Sri Lanka in 2017, during which he visited the Tamil-dominated tea plantation region of the country. PM Modi was also accompanied by the then Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and the then PM Wickremesinghe.

Earlier in the day, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabri in a social media post informed about the resignation of Sri Lankan President Wickremesinghe.

"President Ranil Wickremesinghe left for New Delhi a short while ago at the invitation of the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, to attend his swearing-in ceremony this evening," he said in a post on X.

PM Modi is set to become the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) emerging victorious in the parliamentary elections.He will equal Jawaharlal Nehru's record of becoming Prime Minister of India for the third time after serving two full terms.

Leaders of neighboring countries and the Indian Ocean region are set to attend this much-awaited event as special guests.

This gathering highlights India's unwavering dedication to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy and 'SAGAR' initiative.

Earlier, Sri Lankan President Wickremesinghe had accepted PM Modi's invitation to attend his swearing-in ceremony.

President Wickremesinghe congratulated PM Modi on the election victory of the BJP-led NDA over phone.

During his conversation, PM Modi invited President Wickremesinghe to his oath ceremony, which the Sri Lankan President accepted.

"During the talks, Prime Minister @NarendraModi invited President Wickremesinghe to his swearing-in ceremony, which was accepted by President @RW_UNP," the Media Division of the President of Sri Lanka said in a post earlier on X.,

"President Ranil Wickremesinghe congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the election victory of the @BJP4India-led NDA in a phone call," the post said.

Extending his warm wishes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the victory of the BJP-led alliance in the parliamentary elections in the country, President Ranil Wickremesinghe earlier said that Sri Lanka looks forward to further strengthening the partnership with India.

In a post on Twitter, the Sri Lankan President said, "I extend my hearty congratulations to the @BJP4India led NDA on its victory, demonstrating the faith of the Indian people in progress and prosperity under the leadership of PM @NarendraModi."

“Being its closest neighbour, Sri Lanka looks forward to further strengthening its partnership with India,” he said.

After the ceremony, President Draupadi Murmu will host a banquet for the dignitaries at Rashtrapati Bhavan this evening.
