KATHMANDU: Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' on Friday lost the trust vote in Parliament after the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) withdrew its support to his government.

69-year-old Prachanda got 63 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives (HoR). 194 votes were cast against the proposal.

At least 138 votes are needed to win the trust vote.

Prachanda has survived four trust votes since assuming office on December 25, 2022.

The CPN-UML led by former prime minister KP Sharma Oli withdrew support to the Prachanda-led government last week after it signed a power-sharing agreement with the Nepali Congress - the largest party in the House.

Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba has already supported Oli as the next prime minister.

Nepali Congress has 89 seats in HOR, while CPN-UML has 78 seats. Their combined number of 167 is far more than the 138 required for majority in the lower house.
