New Delhi [India], India and Bangladesh agreed on Saturday to continue expanding their energy and energy collaboration and jointly develop intra-regional electricity trade, including competitively priced power generated from clean energy projects in India, Nepal and Bhutan, through the Indian power grid.

Important agreements covering connectivity, trade and the energy sector were signed during Sheikh Hasina's visit to India.

The start of export of 40 MW of power from Nepal to Bangladesh through the Indian grid was announced.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina, who held a bilateral meeting on Saturday, articulated their shared vision for peace, prosperity and development of the two neighbors and the entire region driven by connectivity, commerce and collaboration.

As part of sub-regional connectivity initiatives, India will expand transit facilities for movement of goods from Bangladesh to Nepal and Bhutan through the railway network.

"We are committed to the early operationalization of the BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement to promote sub-regional connectivity. In this context, we welcome a new Memorandum of Understanding on Railway Connectivity, as well as the decision to start the train service of goods from Gede-Darshana via Chilahati- Haldibari to Hasimara via Dalgaon railway head (when operational) on the India-Bhutan border,” the vision document said.

"We will continue to expand our energy and energy collaboration and jointly develop intra-regional electricity trade, including competitively priced power generated from clean energy projects in India, Nepal and Bhutan, through the Indian power grid To this end, we will continue to accelerate the construction of the 765 kV high capacity interconnection between Katihar-Parbatipur-Bornagar with adequate Indian financial assistance, to act as an anchor for our grid connectivity," he added.

India will launch an e-medical visa service for Bangladeshi citizens coming to India for medical treatment.

India has also decided to open a new consulate in Rangpur, Bangladesh to facilitate services to people in the northwestern region of the country.

The two neighboring countries have started trading in Indian rupees.

During the visit of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, the two countries signed ten memorandums of understanding (MoU) or vision documents and made several announcements.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the first leader on a state visit to India after the formation of the Modi 3.0 government. She had visited India earlier this month to participate in Prime Minister Modi's swearing-in ceremony.
