KATHMANDU, Nepal on Tuesday celebrated Indra Yatra, one of Kathmandu's most vibrant festivals, with thousands of people pulling the wooden chariot of a young girl revered as a living goddess around the capital's main thoroughfare.

Indra Jatra festival is mainly celebrated by the Newar community of Kathmandu Valley for good harvest, good fortune and adequate rain. This festival marks the end of monsoon.

President Ram Chandra Paudel attended the festivities at Basantapur Durbar Square. He reached Gaddibaith, Hanuman Dhoka and received blessings from the living goddess. Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and other dignitaries were also present.

The chariot of the living Goddess Kumari, Ganesha and Bhairav ​​was taken through the streets of the city amidst thousands of cheering people.

The festival involves dancing and lighting of traditional lamps by masked people.

The Hindu festival, which begins with the installation of a wooden pillar known as Lingo in Basantapur, lasts for eight days.
