KATHMANDU, Nepal Army Chief General Prabhuram Sharma on Thursday flagged off the Mountain Cleanup Campaign 2024 in an effort to save the Himalayas by collecting 10 tonnes of garbage from the environmentally fragile region.

According to a statement from Nepal Army Headquarters, the 50-day cleanup operation in the Mount Everest region, Mount Lhotse and Mount Nuptse will be led by a 12-member team of Major Aditya Karki and will bring back five bodies from Everest.

General Sharma, while handing over the flag of the expedition to Karki, said that for successful completion of the expedition, all stakeholders need to cooperate, cooperate and coordinate as conservation of environment in the Himalayan Mountains is a matter of public concern.

The statement said an 18-member Sherpa team will assist the Nepal Army in the cleanup operation.

Nepal Army spokesperson Brig. General Krishna Prasad Bhandari said in a recent press conference that the biodegradable waste would be brought to Namche Bazaar below the base camp and handed over to the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) for proper treatment.

Non-biodegradable waste and dead bodies will be brought to Kathmandu, he said.

Spokesperson Bhandari said the objective of the cleanup campaign is to control man-made pollution in the Himalayas and address problems related to climate change.
