New Delhi, The counseling process for the National Eligibility Undergraduate Entrance Medical Examination and Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2024, which was expected to begin on Saturday, has been delayed.

The counseling session was expected to begin on July 6 even though the Medical Advisory Committee had not shared any detailed notification or timeline for the same.

Sources said the process of issuing permission letters to some medical colleges is still underway and new seats will be added.

"The date of counseling will be announced once the financial year ends to ensure that the seats in the new universities can be filled in the first round," an official source said.

They said counseling could begin later this month.

Amid growing clamor for cancellation of the contentious NEET-UG 2024 over alleged malpractices, the Center and the National Testing Agency told the top court on Friday that scrapping it without any proof of large-scale breach of confidentiality would be counterproductive as could "seriously endanger" thousands of honest candidates.

Last month, the Supreme Court refused to postpone the counseling process of the controversial NEET-UG 2024 exam. It was hearing a petition seeking an order to pause the process for two days.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the National Eligibility and Entrance Test for Undergraduate Degree (NEET-UG) for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses, and the Union Ministry of Education have been in the center of media attention. debates and protests by students and political parties over alleged large-scale malpractices ranging from the leaking of questionnaires to identity theft in the test held on May 5.

While the NEET is under the scanner for several irregularities, including alleged paper leaks, the UGC-NET was canceled when the Education Ministry received information that the integrity of the exam was compromised. Both matters are being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Two other exams, CSIR-UGC NET and NEET-PG, were canceled as a preventive measure. New dates have been announced for both.
