Gangtok, A team of experts from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Wednesday conducted a comprehensive survey of landslide-affected areas in Mangan district of Sikkim.

Along with officials from Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), the NDMA team led by Deputy Commandant Rajat Malhotra visited Mangshila, Naga, Sanklang and Fidang areas.

They identified several major factors including heavy rainfall, steep slopes, challenging topography and unstable soil structure behind the occurrence of landslides in Mangan district, strategically located in North Sikkim.

He said the team also recorded significant damage to infrastructure including roads, houses and agricultural land, in addition to displacement of local people and impact on local economies and livelihoods.

The NDMA team also interacted with the local people and took note of their grievances and assured long term solution to their problems.

The team was briefed by Mangan District Magistrate Anant Jain about the overall situation arising out of the natural disaster in the area and suggested that previous reports in this regard should be kept in mind to understand the gravity of the situation.

Visiting NDMA officials said a comprehensive report would be submitted to higher authorities and the concerned ministry to prepare a long-term plan to address the issue.

Torrential rains left roads extensively damaged in Mangan district last month, leaving nearly 1,500 tourists stranded for a week, while six people died.
