New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Friday said it has initiated legal action against Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra for her remarks against its chairperson Rekha Sharma.

A day earlier, TMC had commented on a video posted on Twitter, which showed the NCW chairperson's arrival at the recent stampede site in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras, saying, "She is talking to her boss. Too busy grabbing pajamas”.

The NCW said in a statement that a formal complaint has been lodged with the Delhi Police and a letter has been sent to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in Parliament stating that Moitra's comments are condemnable in the strongest possible terms and being a Member of Parliament, As such, it does not suit his stature.

Responding to the same, Moitra took a dig at the NCW and posted on Instagram, "Come on @DelhiPolice > Please take immediate action on these suo motu orders. If you need to take quick action in the next 3 days I will be in Nadia." Arrest. I can hold my own umbrella.

In a letter to Birla, the NCW has urged the Lok Sabha Speaker to look into the matter and take appropriate action against Moitra.

"These lewd comments are not only derogatory but also a serious violation of a woman's right to dignity," the NCW said.

In a letter to Delhi Police, the NCW said that upon careful consideration, the commission said it has determined that Moitra's comments fall under Section 79 of the Indian Code of Justice, 2023.
