Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) spokesperson Clyde Crasto on Tuesday claimed that Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar is trying to seek the support of the Christian community in the upcoming assembly elections by showing banners of a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pope Francis. Are. Constituency.

Shelar is the sitting BJP MLA from Vandre (West), Mumbai.

In a post on social media platform X, Crasto said Shelar has failed to address the challenges faced by the Christian community in conflict-torn Manipur.

The NCP (SP) member alleged that BJP leaders were also silent when graves were desecrated in the graveyard attached to St. Michael's Church in Mumbai's Mahim area.

He pointed out that when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a notice to acquire a part of St. Peter's cemetery in Bandra for a private road widening project, Shelar pursued a different political agenda.

Crasto said, "It is important for Sheller to understand that the few individuals in the community who support him for his causes do not represent the entire community."

He said, now is the time for Shelar to realize that showing selective support for Christians through such banners will not get him votes from the minority community.

Assembly elections are to be held in Maharashtra in October.
