Mumbai, amid a massive row over alleged malpractices in conducting NEET and UGC NET exams, NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar on Monday demanded that the Maharashtra government enact a law similar to the one adopted by the Center to curb paper leakage and irregularities. .

An NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) delegation led by Rohit Pawar met Governor Ramesh Bais at Raj Bhavan and asked him to direct the government to bring in a law to curb paper leaks in public examinations.

"We have been demanding a law like the one adopted by the central government. The Uttarakhand governor took the lead by bringing a law against job leakage in public exams," Rohit Pawar told reporters.

"I asked Bais to direct the Maharashtra government to adopt a law against paper leaks or take the lead on the issue," MLA Karjat-Jamkhed added.

He highlighted that demands have been raised on the Maharashtra government to adopt a law similar to the Central Act that aims to prevent unfair means in public examinations and common entrance tests.

Students in Maharashtra have raised a demand to enact such a law for various exams, including civil services, police recruitment and academic entrance tests for professional courses, amid the row over NEET exams.

The Center on Friday brought into force the stringent Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, to curb malpractices and irregularities in examinations and makes provisions for a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine of up to 1 million rupees for violators.

Meanwhile, Rohit Pawar reiterated his claim that several MPs from the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party have been in touch with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP.

"These MLAs will get a final call after the conclusion of the monsoon session of the state legislature and will receive their share of development funds," he said.

He said Sharad Pawar and NCP (SP) state president Jayant Patil will decide whether to reinstate these MLAs.
