New Delhi, National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has advised state governments to hold 'Sarv Dharma Samvad' meetings with all communities at sub-divisional level every month to curb incidents of hate crimes against minority communities.

The MNC said it has advised states and Union Territories (UTs) to identify members of all communities, minority and majority, or opinion makers, NGOs, religious people and educators and involve them in 'Sarv Dharma Samvad' meetings. , according to a statement.

In a bid to protect and safeguard the interests of all minorities, the MNC advised the state governments and UTs to celebrate 'Sarv Dharma Samvad' with all communities at the sub-divisional level of states, at least once a month and , also at the district level, semi-annually, to curb incidents of attacks or hate crimes against minority communities, according to the statement issued by the commission.

The commission emphasized that such incidents result in communal bitterness and discord between communities as hatred is caused by mental weakness and anger.

"Furthermore, every citizen has the right to follow and preach his own religion. Furthermore, it should be the responsibility of citizens and society to repudiate and condemn hate crimes committed by anti-social and disaffected elements, in addition to punitive measures taken by the government .according to territorial law," the statement says.

The authorities must develop mechanisms, duly involving the participation of civil society, to deter such anti-social and anti-national forces and prevent the emergence of violence in the society, the statement said.

The NCM, created under the NCM Act, 1992, has been entrusted, among other things, with the responsibility of safeguarding the interests of the minority communities. In addition to its role, the commission must also undertake confidence-building measures in light of new and emerging challenges.
