Gadchiroli: A Naxalite carrying a reward of Rs 6 lakh surrendered before the police in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra on Tuesday. An officer gave this information.

Ganesh Gatta Punem (35), a resident of Bijapu district of neighboring Chhattisgarh, surrendered before Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operation Jagdish Meena), a release issued by the police said.

Punem was recruited as a member of the supply team with Bhamramgarh LOS in 2018 and was promoted as the deputy commander of the team in 2018.

The release said he was involved in encounters in Mirtur and Timmenar in Bijapur in 2017 and 2022 respectively.

Police said Punem cited lack of medical facilities and misuse of development funds by senior workers as other reasons for her surrender.

It said that the surrendered Naxalite will get Rs 5 lakh as per the rehabilitation policy of the state and centre.

According to the release, 14 hardcore Maoists have surrendered before the Gadchirol Police in the last two years.

Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police Neelotpal has assured all necessary assistance to those willing to surrender and join the mainstream of society.
