Bhubaneswar, Marking the end of his 24-year rule in Odisha, BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday resigned as chief minister following his party's defeat in the assembly elections in the state.

Sources said Patnaik submitted his resignation to Governor Raghubar Das at Raj Bhavan.

Although several BJD leaders had gathered at Patnaik's residence, he came alone to the Governor's house to submit his resignation.

The BJD supremo merely waved at the waiting journalists and left the premises after submitting his resignation letter.

BJP came to power in Odisha by winning 78 out of 147 assembly seats, while BJD managed to win only 51 seats. The Congress won 14 constituencies and the CPI(M) gained one seat, while three independent candidates also emerged victorious. The results were declared on Tuesday.

Patnaik was first sworn in as the Chief Minister of Odisha on 5 March 2000.
