Bengaluru, Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA) and Kayaking and Canoeing Association of Karnataka (KCAC) are organizing the National Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross Championships in Karnataka for the first time from June 19 to June 21.

The event is being organized in collaboration with General Thimayya National Academy of Adventure (GTNAA).

The 12th Senior and 11th Junior National Canoe Slalom and 2nd National Kayak Cross Championships will be held on the Kali River at Ganeshguri, Aveda Village, Joida Taluk from June 19 to June 21.

"Although slalom events are existing Olympic events, the inclusion of Kayak Cross at the upcoming Paris Olympics increases the importance of this championship, providing athletes with an exceptional opportunity to showcase their skills and potentially secure a place on the international stage, Major General M N Devaya, GTNAA advisor and KCAC chairman said.

The championship promises to be a significant boost to sports in India, he said, adding that the championship has groomed and shaped many athletes who have won honors for the country on international platforms.

He pointed out that Dhanalakshmi, one of the extraordinary talents in canoe slalom, who represented the state of Karnataka, is one such example. He won medals in the 36th and 37th National Games held in Gujarat and Goa respectively.

“This year, we will have an unprecedented 27 athletes to represent Karnataka at the championships,” Devaya said.

According to him, the Kali River, famous for its challenging and dynamic rapids, is an ideal venue for this championship. Its natural terrain provides a suitable training area that meets the standards required for both national and international competitions, he said.

Around 80-100 participants from 10 states are expected to participate in the championship.
