Addressing an official function, the Chief Minister said that the government cannot keep the urban areas of eastern Nagaland isolated.

“We will take them on board and give grants for development work,” Rio said.

The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has captured all three municipal councils, Mokokchung, Dimapur and most of the city councils in the urban local body (ULB) elections.

The ULB elections were held on June 26 after a gap of 20 years and the results were declared on June 29.

The civic election was a historic event as it was the first municipal election in Nagaland with 33 per cent reservation for women.

Nagaland has a total of 39 municipal councils, but no elections were held in 15 councils as these are located in six eastern districts where the influential Naga tribal body, Eastern Nagaland People's Organization (ENPO) had called for a vote boycott.

Overall, 79 candidates filed their nominations in these six districts, but ENPO leaders forced the candidates to withdraw their candidatures.

Since 2010, the ENPO has been demanding a separate Frontier Nagaland region or a separate state, consisting of six Eastern Nagaland districts, Longleng, Mon, Noklak, Shamtor, and Tuensang, Khiamnyungan, Konyak, Phom, Tikhir, Sangtam and Yimkhiung.

People in six districts, which have more than four lakh voters, remained indoors during the Lok Sabha elections on April 19, responding to ENPO's boycott call.
