New Delhi: BJP chief JP Nadda on Monday wrote to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, questioning his party's "stoic silence" over the recent liquor tragedy that left several people dead in Tamil Nadu.

The alcohol tragedy in Tamil Nadu was entirely a "man-made disaster", Nadda said in his letter to Kharge, adding that "perhaps if the deep nexus between the dispensation of the ruling DMK-INDI alliance and the liquor mafia illicit acts did not exist today, 56 lives could have been saved.

Nadda said the gruesome images of funeral pyres burning in Karunapuram village in Kallakurichi after the "worst" tragedy of spurious liquor consumption in Tamil Nadu, which has left 56 dead so far and nearly 159 people hospitalized, has shaken the conscience of the entire nation. ".

"Kharge ji, as you know, Karunapuram is largely populated by scheduled castes, who are facing various challenges due to poverty and discrimination in Tamil Nadu. In view of this, I was surprised that when such a big disaster occurred, the party of Congress led by you has maintained a stoic silence on this,” the BJP president said.

"Certain issues require us to go beyond party lines and the welfare and safety of the SC and ST community is one such issue," he added.

Nadda asked Kharge to put pressure on the "DMK-INDI Alliance" government in Tamil Nadu to launch a CBI probe and ensure the "immediate removal" of State Prohibition and Excise Minister S Muthusamy from office.

He also demanded that the amount of compensation to be awarded to victims' families be increased to a "reasonable level" to ensure that these families have adequate support.

"Kharge ji, today is the time to truly walk the talk 'nyay' and not reduce it to a catchy campaign slogan, deployed for the launch of a failed political dynasty. Today, the people of Tamil Nadu and the entire South Carolina community South are witnessing double talk from the Congress Party and particularly from Rahul Gandhi and INDI Alliance leaders," the BJP chief said.

Suddenly, all of Rahul Gandhi's "prudish preachings" on the Constitution and ensuring the welfare and rights of the SC/OBC community have stopped, he charged.

"It's time to act, Kharge ji. Empty words, selling false narratives and empty promises will not undo the 'anyay (injustice)' heaped on SC victims and their families by the DMK-INDI ALLIANCE government" , he added.

The BJP chief also urged Kharge to pursue Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to visit the families of the victims or at least muster the courage to raise their voice on this issue instead of maintaining a "deafening, selective and hypocrite".

He further underlined that there appears to be an "inclination" towards illegal liquor business and "sharab ghotala" (liquor scam) among various components of the INDIA opposition bloc, saying such "inclinations" harm the nation and the society. .

"They should purge their alliance of such elements, which go against the basic philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi ji who was strictly against alcohol consumption and indulge in patronage of illicit liquor trade or liquor scams," Nadda added. .
