AHMEDABAD: UNESCO has shortlisted seven most beautiful museums for the prestigious Prix Versailles award, including Bhuj's Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said on Friday.

Patel said, “A moment of pride for Gujarat and India! The Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum in Bhuj has been listed among the 7 most beautiful museums in the world under the prestigious Prix Versailles award, announced every year by UNESCO for architecture and design. is done." On X.

He further said in the post, it is a matter of pride for Gujarat that for the first time an Indian museum has received global recognition in this manner for the expression of local culture and nature conservation.

Patel said it was the vision of then Gujarat Chief Minister and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build a museum in memory of the victims of the devastating 2001 earthquake as well as pay tribute to the resilience of Kutch.

“On the same basis, Smritivan was constructed in Bhuj.The design of this museum built amidst thousands of trees on Bhujia Hill is remarkable. This museum is a story of courageously facing challenges and building anew from them. This museum is a transcendental experience of the highest essence,” the CM said.

In a release, UNESCO's Prix Versailles said, "For the first time in its history, the Prix Versailles, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is unveiling its list of the World's Most Beautiful Museums for 2024: seven newly opened Or reopened museums that are simultaneously a reflection of creativity, local heritage and eco-efficiency, and which leave an extraordinary mark on their environment."

The release said they will all compete for three 2024 world titles – Prix Versailles, Interior and Exterior – with the winners to be announced at UNESCO headquarters by the end of November.Jérôme Gaudain, secretary general of the Prix Versailles, is pleased that the momentum set by the museum buildings will now be better recognised, it said.
