Mumbai: Two people, including a 60-year-old man, have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a college lecturer and trying to extort money under the pretext of a fake murder case, a Mumbai Police official said on Monday.

The officer said Manoj Dashrath Gupta (60) and Mulayam Birbal Yadav (27) contacted Sagar Sures Fadnavis (44) on Saturday night and told him that a case of murder had been registered against them at Borivali police station.

"The duo called the victim for questioning. They made him sit in an autorickshaw and started robbing him. However, constable Parmeshwar Chauhan, who was passing by, witnessed the incident. He stopped the autorickshaw, talked to the victim and arrested Gupta and Yadav. “Brought to Kandivali police station,” he said.

"Gupta, who has around 20 cases against his name, and Yadav have been booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 365 (kidnapping), 389 (entrapment of a person for the purpose of extortion or implicating a person in the commission of an offence), 170 (mischief against a public servant) and He was arrested under the Impersonation Act), the officer said.
