MUMBAI: Mumbai Police have identified an employee of an ice cream factory in Pune district whose finger was cut off during the manufacturing process, leading to the discovery of human flesh with a nail in a butterscotch ice cream cone, which was shared online by a person in the city. The employee, identified as Omkar Pote, 24, from Pune, lost the tip of his finger while filling ice cream cones at the Fortune Dairy factory in Indapur on May 11.

Officials said on Wednesday that police have collected DNA samples of Pote and sent them to the forensic science laboratory.

The incident came to light when an MBBS doctor from Mumbai found human flesh embedded in an ice cream cone ordered online on June 12.Following the doctor's complaint, a case was registered against officials of Yummo Ice Cream Company and the meat found in the ice cream cone was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Kalina.

To investigate, a team from Malad Police Station went to the ice cream factory in Indapur, where they traced the pot.

An officer said, "Police have collected DNA samples of Pote and sent them to the forensic science laboratory in Kalina to find out whether the part of the finger found in the ice cream belonged to him (Pote) or not." Manoj Tupe, owner of Fortune Dairy, said that they are cooperating in the investigation and are waiting for the DNA report.Tupe noted that his unit was not solely responsible for the incident, as the main firm had outsourced the work of filling ice cream cones to several units, including in Ghaziabad and Jaipur. He said officials have sent teams to these locations for further verification.

"Officials have sent teams to units in Ghaziabad and Jaipur to verify whether any similar incident had taken place on that particular date," he claimed.

Tupe said that after the incident, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a stop work notice to the Fortune Dairy unit in Indapur.
