Mumbai: A Mumbai court on Sunday extended till May 29 the police custody of Bhavesh Bhinde, the director of an advertising company who had put up a hoarding in the Ghatkopar area here, which collapsed and claimed the lives of 17 people.

Bhinde's advertising company M/s Ego Media Private Limited had managed the huge hoarding that fell on a petrol pump during a dust storm and rain on May 13.

Since Bhinde absconded after the incident, the police registered a case against him under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

He was arrested in Udaipur, Rajasthan on 16 May and brought to the city.

Bhinde was later sent to police custody till May 26.

On Sunday, the crime branch probing the case produced Bhinde before the Metropolitan Magistrate court after the expiry of his previous custody period.

It sought her further custody on the grounds that she was also being interrogated about other hoardings put up by the company across the city.

Apart from this, the financial aspects related to the installation of hoardings are also being investigated, police said.

Advocate Rizwan Merchant, appearing for the accused, opposed this and said that the FI is only in relation to the collapsed hoarding.

After hearing both the sides, the court extended Bhinde's police custody till May 29.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, it had not given permission for the hoarding.
