Mumbai: A massive 136 meter long girder weighing 25000 tonnes will be launched on the south-bound corridor of the coastal road at Worli on Friday morning, it will be India's first engineering feat involving such an installation in the sea, Mumbai citizens The body said.

In a release issued on Thursday evening, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the girder will connect the 10.5-km coastal road to the Bandra-Worli sea link.

The southern corridor of the coastal road between Worli and Marine Lines was opened for traffic on March 11 this year. However, it is not connected by sea link.

The launching process of the 136 meter long and 18-21 meter wide bow arch strut type girder is "ambitious" and will last for five to six hours, the release said.

A civic official said the launch would depend on weather conditions, such as sea roughness and wind speed, among other factors.

“The girder has been transported to the launching site by a 2500 tonne barge from Nhava Sheva port. This is the first time in the country that such bow arch string type girder will be installed at sea, and in very few places, such girders Will be launched across the world,” the release said.

BMC said these huge girders, painted with anti-rust colors to protect them from salt water and moisture, are being installed to ensure that fishing boats do not face trouble off the Worli coast .

"Another 143 m long, 26-29 m wide girder of the corridor leading to the north side of the coastal road has also reached Nhava Sheva port and its launching is planned for the end of May. Transportation of the second girder is planned for launching The first girder will be built after,” the BMC release said.
