New Delhi, India's first World T20 champion captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni led the chorus of former and current cricketers, praising Rohit Sharma's men for regaining the trophy after 17 long years, beating South Africa by seven races in a pulsating final at Bridgetown on Saturday.

Former captain Dhoni, who led India to their first title in 2007 in South Africa, praised the team for remaining calm during the adversities of the game.

“WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS 2024. My heart rate increased, congratulations for staying calm, having faith in yourself and doing what you did,” Dhoni wrote (sic) on Instagram. “From all Indians at home and in everyone, a big thank you for bringing the World Cup home. CONGRATULATIONS. Thank you very much for the priceless birthday gift," said Dhoni, who turns 43 early next month.

The legendary Sachin Tendulkar also took to social media to express his joy at India's achievement, saying that the country now has a "fourth star", after two victories in the 50-over World Cup in 1983 and 2011, as well as the historic triumph in the inaugural 2007 World T20.

“Every star added to Team India's jersey inspires the enthusiastic children of our nation to take another step towards their dreams. India gets fourth star, second in T20WC,” he wrote in 'X'.Tendulkar, who was a member of the Indian team that suffered a first-round exit from the 2007 50-over World Cup, said life has made a complete turn.

“Life comes full circle for Indian cricket in the West Indies. From our lows in the 2007 ODI World Cup to becoming a cricketing powerhouse and winning the T20WC in 2024,” he said.

“Very happy for my friend Rahul Dravid, who missed the 2011 World Cup win, but his contribution to this T20 World Cup win has been immense. I am very happy for him.” Praising Rohit Sharma's captaincy and the contributions of the other members of the team, Tendulkar said, “What can be said about Rohit Sharma? Excellent captaincy! “To put the 2023 ODI World Cup defeat behind us and keep all our players motivated towards the T20 World Cup is commendable.”

“Jasprit Bumrah's Player of the Tournament award and Virat Kohli's Player of the Match award are well deserved. They were simply magnificent when needed,” he added.

Former India captain and head coach Anil Kumble wrote: “Congratulations Team India! Wonderful victory."“YEH MERA INDIA. WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS. VERY PROUD OF YOU. (This is my India. We are the champions, I am very proud of you),” wrote former spinner Harbhajan Singh.

Yuvraj Singh, ambassador of the T20 World Cup in the Americas, individually praised all the key members of the team.
