Bhopal: The Congress on Thursday formed a panel of former minister Jaivardhan Singh and former MLA Shailendra Patel to recommend a candidate for the by-election to Madhya Pradesh's Budhni assembly seat, which is currently represented by BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The by-election in this constituency will be necessary as Chouhan was elected to the Lok Sabha from Vidisha and became the Union Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

A party spokesperson said the panel would shortlist candidates in consultation with local Congress leaders in Budhni and submit a name to the state Congress president.

Chauhan won his first assembly election in 1990 from Budhni in Sehore district, and later won the seat for five consecutive terms from 2006 to 2023.
