Dhar (MP), people of many states and a farmers' body have supported activist Medha Patkar, who has been agitating in Madhya Pradesh demanding rehabilitation of those affected in the state by the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) on the Narmada river in neighboring Gujarat.

Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Patkar has been on indefinite hunger strike at Kheda Basti in Chikhalda village, about 125 kilometers from the district headquarters, for the last six days over implementation of Supreme Court directions relating to the rehabilitation of displaced persons.

His health is deteriorating, the NBA said in a statement Thursday.

Activist Prafulla Samantara from Odisha and others from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and Dr Suneelam, former MLA and Samyukta Kisan Morcha leader, arrived at Kheda Basti on Wednesday to support Patkar's ongoing agitation.

"We have come here to provide support and discuss issues with Patkar, and we warn the state and the Center that if the demands for rehabilitation are not met soon, then they (those associated with Patkar) will organize this agitation across the country," Suneelam said. to journalists. .

In 2017, the Supreme Court had ordered monetary compensation for those ousted from the SSP by the MP.

The Supreme Court's decisions (on rehabilitation) should be implemented soon. It also contains a provision that the chief ministers (of the affected states) will meet and understand the situation, especially the water level and how much the reservoirs need to be filled, among others, Suneelam said.

He demanded that the State and the Center organize this meeting soon to provide help to the people affected by the project.

In addition to Patkar, four other women are also on a relief hunger strike, the NBA said in the statement.

A team of health officials examined Patkar's condition but the administration did not take any final decision on the issue, he added.

His supporters on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to the Dhar district collector demanding that the water level in the Sardar Sarovar dam be maintained at 122 meters to facilitate rehabilitation of the remaining affected people under the 'rehabilitation policy'.
