Port Blair: An estimated 21.82 per cent of the total 3,15,148 voters in Andaman and Nicobar Islands have exercised their franchise till 11 am on Friday for the sole Lok Sabha in the Union Territory, an official said.

Chief Electoral Officer BS Jaglan said that till now the voting is going on peacefully.

"So far polling is going on peacefully as we can see that a large number of male and female voters came to their respective booths. There were some minor EVM glitches but they were rectified immediately. This should not cause any hindrance in the polling process. No. The CEO told.

27 voters belonging to the Great Andamanese (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group – PVTG) in the Strait Islands (in the North and Middle Andaman district) exercise their voting rights. The Strait of Grea is a restricted area due to the Andamanese Tribal Reserve.

The CEO said, "It is good to see that even the tribal tribes are exercising their franchise. Each ballot is a testament to unity and participation. So far, voting is going on peacefully across the archipelago."

A total of 12 candidates, including two women and five independent candidates, are in the fray for the lone Lok Sabha seat. However, the contest is between Congress and BJP. This time BJP has made Bishnu Pad Ray its candidate, while Congress has decided to field its sitting MP Kuldeep Rai Sharma again against Ray.

The total number of voters in the Union Territory (UT) is 3,15148, which includes 1,64,012 male, 1,51,132 female and four voters from the third gender category. The voters also include 39 people from the Great Nicobarese tribe of the Strai Islands, 68 from the Onge tribe of Hutt Bay and 98 from the Shompen tribe of Great Nicobar Island.
