An official said 16.54 per cent voting was recorded till 9 am on Saturday in eight Lok Sabha seats in Kolkata, West Bengal, where voting took place in the sixth phase.

Voting began at 7 am in Tamluk, Kanthi, Ghatal, Jhargram, Medinipur, Purulia Bankura and Bishnupur constituencies. This will continue till 6 pm.

Tamluk recorded the highest turnout of 19.07 percent, followed by Bishnupu (18.56 percent), Ghatal (18.27 percent), Bankura (17.69 percent), Jhargara (16.22 percent), Kanthi (15.45 percent), Medinipur (14.58 percent). per cent) and Purulia (12.68 per cent), he said.

“So far the voting has been peaceful. There is no news of any untoward incident from anywhere.

He said that till 8.55 am, the election office of West Bengal received 364 complaints.

A total of 1,45,34,228 voters – 73,63,273 men, 71,70,822 women and 133 of the third gender – are eligible to exercise their franchise across 15,600 polling stations.

Of the 79 candidates in the fray, Bankura and Jhargram have the highest number of candidates with 13 each, followed by Purulia (12) and Medinipur and Tamluk with nine candidates each.

Seven candidates each are contesting from Bishnupur and Ghatal seats.

Notable candidates in the fray in this phase include Bengali superstar Dev, who is contesting for the third time as TMC MP from Ghatal, former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, the BJP candidate in Tamluk, Union minister Subha Sarkar in Bankura and fashion designer Agnimitra is included. Paul, a BJP MLA, had contested against TMC MLA and actor June Maliya in Medinipur.

A total of 919 companies of central forces along with over 29,000 state police personnel have been deployed, officials said.
