Alagiawanna said the National Road Safety Council has allocated 50 million rupees (about US$165,000) to the Sri Lanka Police to purchase speed control equipment.

He said the transport ministry will also issue a gazette with the new road speed limit within the next two weeks, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Minister of State said that road safety clubs will be set up at the school level to enhance the importance of following road rules.

Accidents involving motor vehicles are common in Sri Lanka. There were 2,557 deaths in 2,200 fatal traffic accidents in Sri Lanka in 2023.
