Mumbai, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said Chabahar Port will definitely see more investment and connectivity links after India and Iran signed a long-term contract for operating the Shahi Beheshti Port Terminal.

He also said that the port will help in better connecting India and Central Asia.

"Right now the port is not developed. It is difficult to invest in the port if you don't have a long-term agreement. So there is a very clear expectation that the part of Chabahar which we are involved in will definitely see more investment from this," Jaishankar said. More connectivity linkages will emerge from the port.

"We believe today that connectivity is a big issue in that part. Chabahar will connect us to Central Asia," he said.

According to a series of posts on Twitter by the Indian Embassy in Iran, the contract was signed in Tehran by India Ports Global Limited and Maritime Organization of Ports of Iran in the presence of Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.

This is the first time that India will take over the management of a foreign port.
