Kolkata: A rally of monks was held in Kolkata on Friday condemning Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's recent comments against some monks of Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangh.

Known as the "Sant Swabhiman Yatra", the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), along with members of the Bangiya Sanyasi Samaj, the highest body of saints in the state, led the rally from Bagbazar in North Kolkata to Shimla Street, the ancestral residence of Swami Vivekananda. Did. , ,

A protesting monk said, "We condemn the comments of the Honorable Chief Minister against us. We are saddened by the derogatory comments and feel insulted. She is not following Ra Dharma."

Senior VHP leader Sourish Mukherjee said, 'Because of vote bank politics, the Chief Minister is making such comments against prestigious institutions like Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangh.'

Recently, in an election rally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had accused the TMC supremo of threatening the monks for vote bank politics.

Banerjee defended her stance, saying that she had only criticized specific individuals of those monastic orders, not the institutions.

Modi's comments come a day after miscreants vandalized the Ramakrishna Mission (RKM) complex in Jalpaiguri and threatened monks and other staff at gunpoint.

An RKM official suggested that a local land mafia was behind the Sunda morning incident, which was reportedly a case of property dispute.

RKM has filed a complaint against Loka Tough and his associates at Bhaktinagar police station.

Following Banerjee's comments, political tension escalated as both the BJP and TMC used the development to consolidate their respective support bases ahead of the elections.
