New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday extended by two weeks the interim bail granted earlier on medical grounds to former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik in the money laundering case.

A bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma took note of the submissions of a lawyer appearing for the Enforcement Directorate that they have not yet received fresh instructions in the case and adjourned the hearing for two weeks.

The top court extended the relief of interim bail for the same period.

The interim bail granted to Malik in August 2023 has been extended from time to time.

Malik had moved the apex court against the Bombay High Court's July 13, 2023 order denying him bail on medical grounds in the case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The top court had earlier said that Malik is suffering from kidney disease and his condition has not improved after he was granted interim bail for two months on August 11, 2023.

The ED had arrested Malik in February 2022 in a case allegedly related to the activities of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his associates.

Malik had sought relief from the High Court claiming that he was suffering from chronic kidney disease besides several other ailments. He also sought bail on merits.

The ED case against Malik is based on an FIR lodged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against Dawood Ibrahim, a designated global terrorist and the main accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts, and his associates. ,
